The Quarter in Pictures – Fall 2025: From a Nobel Prize winner to a national championship

Welcome to The Daily’s third The Quarter in Pictures. We’ve chosen one photo from each week to represent Fall Quarter 2025 — based on its visuals, community impact and ability to transport you into our photographer’s shoes.

Week 2: The Central Street Busker Fest took over a small portion of the street on Sept.20 with jugglers, musicians, poets and other street performers drawing about 450 attendees into the early evening. Week 4: Since September, North Shore Says NO! has organized protests every Friday to oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the Chicago area. Week 5: Economics and history Prof. Joel Mokyr was announced as one of three winners of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Oct. 13. Mokyr won half of The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for 2025 for his work demonstrating how technological processes have led to sustained economic growth. Week 8: Dozens of students gathered at The Rock for food, drinks, Latin music and a candle-lit ofrenda at a Día de los Muertos celebration on Nov. 2 hosted by Mariachi Northwestern. Students painted The Rock with a festive calavera, or skull, to commemorate the cultural celebration. Performers stood in front of a growing crowd as Latin student groups sold cultural staples, from conchas and chocolate-filled churros to horchata and hot chocolate. Week 10: With a sold-out crowd of 1,000 in Cahn Auditorium on Nov. 15, ReFusionShaka united three of NU’s top dance groups: Fusion, Refresh and rhythm ensemble Boomshaka. Each performance also featured two or three guest groups. Every November, ReFusionShaka draws thousands of students and alumni to Cahn for a two-hour set highlighting each group individually with a few full company dances.
