Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary plans to relocate its campus to the southern portion of Northwestern’s campus in 2027, it announced in a Tuesday news release.
Currently located in the center of NU’s campus on Sheridan Road, Garrett’s new classrooms will be in the renovated Jacobs Center next to Deering Library, and NU will acquire Garrett’s current campus.
The move is part of GarrettNEXT, a strategic plan to improve access to theological education while strengthening the seminary’s partnership with the University.
Since 2021, international students have made up almost one-quarter of Garrett’s student body, and Garrett has seen a 30% increase in online students over the past two years. According to Garrett, the seminary is moving to adapt to the changing needs of their growing and increasing global student body.
The relocation plan includes integrating Garrett’s library into NU’s system and expanding student housing into the University’s graduate residences.
Garrett’s partnership with the University has lasted for over a century and a half. The institutions share numerous resources, and Garrett students can utilize NU libraries and cross-register for graduate-level courses.
Additional details about the relocation, including the timeline, building design and features, will be released in the coming months. The University has not announced plans for Garrett’s current campus, but as a historically landmarked site, it will remain a central and visible part of campus, the release stated.
