Northwestern won the team championship at the St Andrews Links Collegiate Wednesday, defeating Arizona 4.5-1.5 in medal match play on the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland.
Senior Cameron Adam led the Wildcats in match play, carrying over momentum from his 3-under 137 (70-67) share of second place during Monday and Tuesday’s stroke play rounds on the Jubilee Course.
Adam finished the first day of the tournament in sixth place with an even-par 70. He secured his stroke play runner-up finish and — with a series of birdies — Tuesday’s lowest score.
NU closed stroke play with a team score of 6-over 706 (351-355), falling to Arizona but beating Howard and St. Andrews.
Joining Adam on the leaderboard, junior Daniel Svärd placed fifth with a 1-over 141 (71-70). Sophomore Archie Finnie placed seventh with a 2-over 142 (69-73). Junior Akshay Anand and sophomore Niall Shiels-Donegan tied for eighth, with both shooting a 3-over 143.
Wednesday’s match play round took place in the cold, rainy conditions Glasgow-born Shiels-Donegan and Edinburgh natives Adam, Finnie and coach David Inglis grew up with.
Following a birdie on the 18th hole, Adam turned in the lowest score of the day with a 4-under 68. Svärd, Shiels-Donegan and Anand also won their matches.
Svärd sank a long birdie putt on the 15th hole to secure a 3-under 69, defeating Arizona’s Tiger Christensen by one stroke. After multiple birdies, Shiels-Donegan defeated Arizona’s first-place stroke play medalist Zach Pollo by two strokes with a 3-under 69. Anand defeated Mataj Baca by four strokes with an even-par 72.
Finnie tied his match, earning a half-point for the team, while junior Ethan Tseng dropped his match by a two-stroke margin.
The ‘Cats will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for The Clerico on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29, where they’ll close out the fall season.
