The death of Northwestern graduate student Sasha Novozhenova has been ruled a suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner, an employee confirmed to The Daily on Monday.

Novozhenova, a third-year art history doctoral student, was found dead in her Rogers Park apartment in January. Her cause of death was not immediately determined, and was not publicized at the time.

She was writing her dissertation on “the energy unleashed by socialist enthusiasm” as a way to understand Socialist Realism, Graduate School Dean Teresa Woodruff wrote in an email to the community shortly after Novozhenova’s death.

This was the second reported suicide in the Northwestern community during the 2018-2019 academic year.
