Wrestling: Matt Storniolo named full-time head coach

Matt Storniolo has been named Northwestern’s head coach, the program announced Thursday.

After spending six years as an assistant, Storniolo was named interim coach before the 2015-16 season following the departure of Drew Pariano. The Wildcats went 2-13 last season and failed to win a single conference dual.

“Matt is the right person to lead this program and provide our student-athletes the best opportunity to excel academically, socially and athletically,” athletic director Jim Phillips said in a news release. “Over seven years at Northwestern he has been a tremendous mentor for our young men, and we’re excited to watch him continue to build this program in the nation’s premier wrestling conference.”

Under Storniolo, the Cats struggled to their worst record since the 2001-02 season. NU’s season was marred by injuries, with the Cats being forced to forfeit multiple bouts before most matches began.

Correction: A previous version misstated the team’s record. The team did not win a single conference dual last season. The Daily regrets the error.
