An Evanston police officer was charged last week for committing a hit-and-run in Hammond, Indiana, on Aug. 23, Evanston Police Department spokesman Perry Polinski said.

The officer, 40-year-old Daniel Kooi, collided with a motorcyclist who had the right-of-way, Cmdr. Diane Davis said. The motorcyclist survived the crash but sustained serious bodily injuries, she said.

According to police reports, EPD put Kooi on administrative leave without pay shortly after the accident occurred in 2015.

Kooi joined EPD in 2001 and lives in Lansing, Illinois Polinski said.
