Redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson will be Northwestern’s starting quarterback in the Wildcats’ first game against Stanford on Sept. 5, coach Pat Fitzgerald announced via Twitter on Thursday.

The anointing of a starter ends months of speculation over succession to the graduated Trevor Siemian, who is currently fighting for a roster spot with the NFL’s Denver Broncos. Thorson, long considered a front-runner thanks in part to his status as a former four-star recruit, beat out senior Zack Oliver and sophomore Matt Alviti for the starting nod.
