Person in custody after botched drug deal, car chase

Police said they took a person into custody this afternoon after a botched drug deal led to a car chase near Main Street.

They recovered a handgun, crack cocaine and more than $1,000 in the process, according to police.

The pursuit began while officers were responding to an armed robbery call at about 4:45 p.m., police said. The officers noticed a vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and Ridge Avenue that matched the caller’s description. They tried to stop the car, but it fled and hit several other vehicles in the 1700 block of Main Street.

Police said the officers were unable to find a second person using a canine unit. Charges against the person in custody were pending as of 8 p.m.

No one was injured as a result of the car crashes, according to police.

Police attributed the incident to a “drug deal gone awry.” The caller did not cooperate with police, police said.

The events played out as Evanston experienced its first major snowfall of the season. The city saw 1.75 inches of snow by about 7:15 p.m., easily surpassing officials’ expectations, said James Maiworm, assistant director of the Public Works Department.
