Lacrosse: Northwestern advances to Final Four with win over Duke

Northwestern beat Duke 12-7 on Saturday night to make it to its eighth consecutive Final Four under coach Kelly Amonte Hiller.

The star of the game for the Wildcats was senior goalkeeper Brianne LoManto, who made eight saves including a couple from in front of the net. Her best save came a little more than four minutes into the second half, when she robbed Amanda Jones, who was standing unmarked in front of the cage, preserving the Cats’ two-goal lead.

Junior midfielder Erin Fitzgerald led NU in scoring with four goals including three in the first half. Senior attacker Shannon Smith added three scores, passing Kristen Kjellman for most career goals in school history with 252 goals.

The Blue Devils were led by Maddy Morrissey and Taylor Thimble who each had two goals apiece. Makenzie Hommel added three points in the losing effort.

NU will face Maryland in the semifinals on Friday, a rematch of the last two national title games.
