A Northwestern Law student died Saturday after he was hit by a car while crossing the street.
The driver of the car, who has been charged with driving under the influence, fled the scene but was later arrested, according to Chicago police.
Jesse Bradley, 32, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police.
Bradley was struck by the car at 2:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of North LaSalle Street.
His mother, Colleen, who learned of her son’s death Saturday morning, said she is experiencing a mother’s “worst nightmare.”
The driver, 21-year-old Bianca N. Garcia, has been charged with driving under the influence, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and reckless driving. She has also been charged with driving without a license or insurance.
The driver and passenger of the car were in stable condition.
University spokesman Al Cubbage confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that Bradley was a third-year student at the law school.
“When you met Jesse, you knew you met a kindred spirt, a kind soul,” said Clifford Zimmerman, the associate dean at the law school.
Zimmerman said the law school community has been notified of Bradley’s death.
Colleen Bradley said her son came into the world to do great things and had been taken “carelessly away.”
“He was my beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed baby boy,” Bradley said.
