After accident, Evanston mother charged with endangering child

A 35-year-old Evanston woman was charged Friday with endangering the life of her 2-year-old child, said Evanston Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Tom Guenther.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services contacted EPD about the child, who had received burns to the abdomen from hot water the mother was using to clean the apartment.

The child was present while the mother tried to exterminate an infestation in her apartment using some hot water and a plastic pail, Guenther said. The child fell into the pail containing the hot water, causing the burns.

“The Evanston Police Department then took the case under investigation and determined that the mother was negligent in her supervision of the child by allowing the burn to take place,” Guenther said.

The mother has other children who also live with her in the Darrow Avenue apartment, Guenther said.

EPD and DCFS are working jointly to set up a protection plan involving the children and those who may be associated with the immediate family, Guenther said.
