Evanston Public Library director to step down July 15

Evanston Public Library Director Mary Johns will step down from her current position July 15, according to a news release from City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.

Johns will become director of the Siouxland Libraries in Sioux Falls, S.D., according to the release. Lesley Williams, EPL’s current adult services manager, will take her place until an interim library director is appointed. Bobkiewicz said he expects an interim director to be appointed by Sept. 1.

“Mary Johns has served as Library Director during a complex period in the history of the Evanston Public Library,” Bobkiewicz said in the release. “The Library has been through difficult budget and governance challenges while seeing a rebirth of active community support for its services. Through all of these demanding times, Mary has remained focused on providing the best possible service to library patrons and supporting the talented staff of the library. Mary’s dedication to serving the residents of Evanston will be missed.”

Before assuming her current position in 2008, Johns worked as assistant library director in Lincoln, Neb., according to the release.
