Blotter 5/9: Suspicious object causes bomb scare

A “suspicious device” found on the corner of Grove Street and Ridge Avenue on Sunday afternoon was determined not to be a bomb but a geocache tube, police said.

Around 2 p.m., a local resident spotted the object in Alexander Park and notified police. Responding officers were not able to classify the object, so they called the Cook County Bomb Squad to investigate further, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

Upon their arrival, the bomb squad dismantled the object and determined it was not any type of explosive or incendiary device.

A geocache tube is a device used in a geocaching game, where players try to locate hidden geocaches filled with small items. Players “use GPS devices to find the containers and then share their experiences online,” according to the geocaching website.

The device was described as a small carbon dioxide container that resembled a pipe bomb, Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said.
