City gives holiday shoppers break on parking fees

Holiday shoppers in Evanston will be able to park downtown for free this winter.

The city will waive fees at Lot 60, 1234 Chicago Ave., and at three self-park garages on Sherman Plaza, Maple Avenue and Church Street starting Nov. 25, according to a Monday news release by city spokesman Eric Palmer.

Parking will be free weekdays from 5 p.m. to midnight and all day Saturday. Sundays are already free in the city’s parking garages. The deal ends Jan. 1.

The city also sponsored holiday parking in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, Parking Services Manager Rickey Voss estimated the promotion would cost the city $41,000 but said he hoped to generate goodwill among businesses downtown.
