A man reached into a woman’s car and stole her wallet Wednesday when she stopped at Emerson Street and Darrow Avenue to ask him and his friends for directions, police said.

The woman was looking for a friend’s house around 3 p.m. and got lost, said Evanston Police Department Cmdr. Tom Guenther. When she asked the three men on the sidewalk for directions, one reached through her window and took her wallet and a pack of cigarettes out of her purse. Guenther said the wallet contained $83.

The woman drove a few blocks before discovering the wallet was gone, Guenther said. Police are still investigating.
