North Campus robbery marks 3rd attack of quarter

A Northwestern student was robbed near a dorm on the university’s North Campus Tuesday night, Assistant Chief Daniel McAleer of University Police said. It was the third attack involving an NU student during Spring Quarter.

Two men approached the victim, a McCormick senior, between Bobb Hall and the Delta Upsilon fraternity house at about 8:30 p.m, McAleer said.

The men, described to be between 19 and 21 years old, told the 21-year-old victim to give them all the money in his wallet.

The victim gave the men $150 and a check made out to him for an undisclosed amount, McAleer said. The men then walked north on Sheridan Road.

The victim told police he did not see any weapons during the incident, but the men held their hands inside their shirts in a threatening manner.

Alan Cubbage, vice president of university relations, called the incident “really unusual.” Cubbage said he has worked with the university for eight years, and with the exception of several incidents near South Campus in fall 2003, he said he could not recall any similar incidents.

“The fact that this occurred on campus is definitely a matter of concern,” Cubbage said.

A description of the men was broadcast to all on-duty University and Evanston police officers, several of whom responded to the scene. Officers searched the area, but no suspects were found.

University Police have increased the surveillance of the area since the attack, McAleer said. There will be more car and foot patrols on that end of campus, he said.

Cubbage said students should travel in groups during late hours and take advantage of the shuttle and escort services available on campus.

NU and Evanston are generally safe areas, he said.

NU students have been attacked in three incidents since March. In mid-April, four students were attacked near downtown Evanston in two separate incidents. One student was the victim of an attempted robbery on the 1500 block of Oak Avenue on Apr. 14.

Less than 24 hours later, three Northwestern students were attacked by a group of men near the Metra station on Davis Street. One student was taken to the hospital and received stitches for facial injuries.
