“Every honor we receive is touched by sadness,” said David Meeks, city editor for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “We’ve had a lot of awards come our way, but it’s come at a great loss to our city, and we’ll never forget that.”
Meeks and Terri Troncale, editorial page editor for the Times-Picayune, received the 2005 Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for their coverage of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They spoke to about 160 people at the McCormick Tribune Center Monday afternoon, showing slides of the devastation, their headlines and front pages, and the ongoing efforts to rebuild the city.
