ASG poll shows wide support for move to raise activites fee to fund more student groups

More than three-quarters of the students who responded to an online poll said they would support raising the Student Activities Fee, and the Associated Student Government will hear a bill supporting the proposed fee increase at Wednesday’s Senate meeting.

Seventy-seven percent of the 546 students polled last week on HereAndNow supported the suggested increase, according to ASG Financial Vice President Sara Ittelson, a Communication junior. Fourteen students abstained from the vote.

The poll proposed a $2 increase per quarter in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years, and a $1.30 increase each quarter in the 2008-09 school year, ASG Executive Board members said.

The Student Activities Fee is a $40 quarterly fee that is used to fund some student groups. Increasing the fee would adjust for inflation and provide funding groups that do not currently receive money from the fee.

The bill senators will hear Wednesday calls on the board of trustees to increase the fee. It also asks that the Student Activities Finance Board and the ASG Executive Committee re-evaluate the fee again in three years.

The poll was a referendum, which means that ASG cannot pass any legislation directly contradicting the results of the poll for at least two years. But they can still fail to pass a bill supporting the raise. Discussions about the bill have been on going since the start of Winter Quarter.
