Cats earn top spots and sharp weapons (Fencing)

The Northwestern fencing team won first place in two of three events Saturday and Sunday at the Remenyik Open, held in Patten Gymnasium. The event was a tune-up for the regular season, which starts Nov. 16.

Sophomore Lauren Dunn not only won the sabre competition, she also moved up to the highest level recognized by the United States Fencing Association.

While Dunn said she was pleased with her sabre victory, she said she was more proud of earning her ‘A’ ranking from the USFA. The ranking — one of five levels the association awards — is given to the most successful fencers.

“It was five years of really hard work that finally pulled together,” Dunn said.

Although Dunn focused more on gaining the ranking than on winning the tournament, she said she was glad she won the final match against a familiar face.

“The girl I beat was my prospie, and I didn’t want my prospie to beat me,” she said.
