CHICAGO — Northwestern cornerback Nick VanHoose left Saturday’s game against Illinoisduring the second quarter with an apparent head injury.

The senior was carted off the field after taking a knee to the helmet. He remained on the ground for several minutes before standing and signaling “thumbs-up.”

A four-year starter, VanHoose was named second-team All-Big Ten by league media in 2014. Entering Saturday’s game, he had interceptions in three of NU’s last four games, bringing his career total to eight.

NU sports announced on Twitter that VanHoose will return to the sideline for the second half but will not play.
