Evanston residents have a new spot to grab a to-go breakfast before heading to class or work. In early March, New Yolktown, a Korean sandwich shop, opened at 1571 Sherman Ave.
New Yolktown serves stuffed scrambled egg sandwiches and a variety of coffees, including its new Cinnamon Toast Latte. The shop is open every day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it is quickly becoming a staple for some students and residents to kick off their days.
Manager Jack Kim said he noticed a lack of breakfast sandwich spots in Evanston, prompting him to bring New Yolktown to the city.
“Bringing out good food, good breakfast, out to people, and to see them enjoy our food, that’s our top priority,” Kim said.
Growing up, Kim said he had always been interested in the food industry and worked in a variety of different restaurants.
New Yolktown’s sandwiches center on scrambled eggs, while bringing street food to the Evanston brunch scene.
Kim said the shop is inspired by Isaac Toast, a South Korean street food chain known for its crispy toast. His personal favorite menu item is the Sando-Bacon Egg with added avocado, which he said “balances out the saltiness and savoriness.”
Evanston resident George Mavrakis said he happened upon New Yolktown while walking around downtown Evanston.
“I don’t think you can find these specific egg sandwiches anywhere else,” Mavrakis said. “I think it’s filling something unique.”
As it establishes itself in the Evanston community, the restaurant is holding a promotion, where students with a valid ID can receive a 50% discount on the entire menu on April 4. Kim said the restaurant is also planning to offer a long-term 10% student discount.
Weinberg senior Julia Davis stopped by New Yolktown for the first time after finding it on Google Maps while looking for a spot to get breakfast.
“We have a lot of sit-down breakfast places, but not a lot of grab (and go),” Davis said. “It’s like they have coffee or sit-down, but this is a good in-between.”
