Redshirt senior 133-pounder Sean Spidle and freshman 141-pounder Billy Dekraker qualified for the NCAA Championships as Northwestern finished second-to-last at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State last weekend.
It was the third straight year that the Wildcats (3-9, 1-7 Big Ten) found themselves in the bottom three at the end of conference weekend. The streak is the longest for the team since 2001 to 2005, and only the program’s fifth run of three or more years in the bottom three since the team points system was introduced in 1934.
Spidle wrestled to his No. 7 seed with a seventh-place finish, punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland. In his first action since Jan. 30, Spidle dropped his first-round bout to Purdue’s No. 10 seed Blake Boarman — who upset the reigning national champion in the next round — but picked up a 1-0 win over No. 9 seed Dylan Shawver of Rutgers to clinch a podium spot.
He lost 14-2 to Wisconsin’s No. 4 seed Zan Fugitt in the next round, putting him in the seventh-place bout. His opponent, No. 6 seed Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska, forfeited the match due to injury. Spidle will likely look to play spoiler as a No. 21 seed in a historically loaded 133-pound weight class at the national championships.
Tournament No. 8 seed Dekraker reached the podium with an eighth-place finish, enough to earn an at-large bid and the No. 31 seed in Cleveland. A 15-0 technical fall victory over Indiana’s No. 9 seed Henry Porter took him to the quarterfinals, where he was promptly pinned in 64 seconds by eventual Big Ten champion Jesse Mendez of Ohio State.
Dekraker met Purdue’s No. 7 seed Greyson Clark in his first consolation bout. Sitting up in the waterfall position, Dekraker turned around to secure Clark’s ankles for a takedown in the opening minute. A second-period reversal for two points provided enough of a cushion to overcome a late flurry of attacks and seal a 5-4 win.
That set up a date with Maryland’s upstart No. 11 seed Dario Lemus, who reached the podium by pinning No. 5 seed Dylan Ragusin of Michigan. Thirty-eight seconds into the second period, Dekraker’s chin collided with the top of Lemus’ head in a scramble, leading to a 10-minute stoppage while Dekraker was checked for an apparent head injury.
Down 7-2 in the third period, Dekraker rallied back with a reversal and a takedown to bring himself within two points with 18 seconds to go. Lemus was able to weather the onslaught, though, and secured the 9-7 win. Dekraker lost his seventh-place bout 8-1 to No. 6 seed Braeden Davis of Penn State.
In weight classes that were allocated eight or more automatic qualification spots, wrestlers who had already lost in the consolation bracket returned to determine further placements.
Tournament No. 10 seed and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Eddie Enright wrestled 10 days after undergoing surgery to remove his meniscus, his father posted on X on Tuesday. The surgery normally takes four to six weeks to recover from, he told The Daily when reached via Instagram.
Enright was told that forfeiting due to injury would be a “death sentence” for his chances of getting an at-large bid, his father wrote, so he wrestled with stitches still in his knee.
After dropping bouts against the No. 7 and No. 9 seeds, Enright was one match away from getting the last automatic qualifying spot offered in his weight class when he fell to Indiana’s No. 6 seed Derek Gilcher.
Gilcher fell into the extra-placements bracket after losing to the No. 11 seed in the first round, one of many upsets in the weight class in conference championships across the country. With the 13th, 15th, 18th and 21st-ranked wrestlers in the NCAA coaches’ poll all gunning for one of four at-large bids, 31st-ranked Enright found himself on the outside looking in.
The same was true for tournament No. 10 seed and redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Dedrick Navarro, who encountered No. 3 seed Spencer Moore of Illinois in the ninth-place bracket. Regular season wins against at-large bid receivers Brady Roark, Sulayman Bah and Nicolar Rivera were not enough to earn a spot for himself.
The national championships will be held from March 19 to 21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
