Effective Dec. 15, the on-campus Northwestern Medical Group Pharmacy will shut down, according to postings in Searle Hall from Northwestern Medicine.
Northwestern Medicine Student Health Service will also no longer dispense medications or sell over-the-counter medications after Dec. 15.
The University confirmed the closure in a Friday email to students from Vice President for Student Affairs Susan Davis and Northwestern Medicine Director of Operations Lindsay Laughner.
According to the email, the decision to close the pharmacy was made by the University after studying historical and current utilization of the campus pharmacy and the availability of retail pharmacies close to campus.
The email noted that students have several retail pharmacies within walking distance and can use mail-order pharmacies.
Students enrolled in the NU Student Health Insurance Plan can use CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy.
After the NMSHS ceases its pharmacy services, students’ existing prescriptions will be transferred to a “local pharmacy” yet to be announced. There will no longer be a pharmacy for students on the Evanston campus.
To transfer prescriptions, students can call their new pharmacy to request a transfer, which the University encourages students to do before Dec. 12.
Correction: A previous version of this story misstated how students can transfer their prescriptions. The Daily regrets the error.
