Northwestern men’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer, Boo Buie, signed a two-way contract with the New York Knicks on Tuesday.
The two-way contract will allow Buie to play for the New York Knicks and their G-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, this season. Under this contract, the 24-year-old will make half the rookie minimum salary and be eligible to play in 50 of the 82 games in the NBA regular season.
The new deal comes after the former Wildcats guard was waived by New York on Oct. 9, two days after he signed an Exhibit 10 Contract with the team. He had also been included on the Knicks training camp roster.
The Knicks packaged the Buie deal in a news day which included the signings of center Ariel Hukporti and forward Matt Ryan ahead of today’s NBA Roster deadline. Hukporti, who was previously on a two-way contract, was signed to a two-year contract Tuesday, freeing up the spot for Buie.
During his time with NU, the New York native earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, led the ’Cats to two consecutive March Madness appearances, broke the all-time scoring record by more than 100 points and won the 2023-24 Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year award as the top defender in college basketball. Over his five-year career, Buie averaged 14.7 points per game, 4.1 assists per game and 2.8 rebounds per game.
After going undrafted in the NBA Draft last spring, Buie spent the summer with the Phoenix Suns, averaging nine points per game, two assists per game and 1.4 rebounds per game in the NBA2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas.
Last year, the Knicks earned the 2-seed in the Eastern Conference, reaching the conference semifinals. Their next game is on Wednesday against Atlanta, and Buie may be able to take the court then. If New York sends him to the G League, the Westchester Knicks will start their season on Sunday facing off against the Long Island Nets.
