Evanston Police Department officers responded to a report of a robbery behind the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center in northwest Evanston on Thursday evening.

A male Evanston resident met a woman he knew behind the building, at 1655 Foster St., to lend her some money, and she arrived with another, unknown woman, said Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew.

The unknown woman maced the man in the face while the first woman took his Samsung Galaxy Note9 smartphone, Glew said.

The man told officers he would be able to recognize both women involved and that there was a witness to the incident, Glew added.

Target robbery prevented

EPD officers arrested a 29-year-old Evanston resident after he attempted to steal an iPhone X from the 1616 Sherman Ave. Target in downtown Evanston on Thursday evening.

Target Loss Prevention told officers that the man, who was an employee of the Target, took the phone from a back storage cabinet, and hid it until the end of his shift, Glew said.

The man put the phone in his pocket at the end of his shift, passed the last point of sale and was apprehended by a Loss Prevention agent, at which point he admitted to taking the phone, Glew added.
