A 66-year-old man was charged with criminal damage to property, a misdemeanor, on Friday, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said.

Dugan said the man damaged a woman’s car in the parking lot of the Jewel-Osco in south Evanston on Jan. 10. She parked her car in the lot on on the 2400 block of Howard Street at 4:18 p.m., Dugan said. Dugan said she reported the man came up to her and began yelling over a parking dispute.

He added that when she exited the store about an hour later, the left side of the vehicle had a long scratch on it. Dugan said the damage is estimated at $1,436.29.

Upon checking security footage, it appeared that the man with whom she had spoken earlier, a Chicago resident, had returned and walked along the driver’s side of the woman’s car, Dugan said. The store security discovered he had paid for his items with a credit card, and detectives were able to identify the man.

Evanston Police Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Dewey Avenue in response to drug activity in a vehicle on Friday at just after 6:30 p.m.

They found three men in the vehicle, Dugan said. A 22-year-old Evanston resident was in the driver’s seat. He appeared intoxicated and was later arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police also recovered two Alprazolam pills, a generic form of Xanax, that he did not have a prescription for, Dugan said.

He was also charged with possession of open alcohol in a vehicle, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a felony.
