The Wildcats let their less-experienced runners take charge this weekend.

On Friday, Northwestern placed fifth out of seven teams at the Bradley Intercollegiate with an average time of 19:07 by its five runners for the three-mile race. Bradley, which hosted the tournament, came in first place with an average time of 17:16.6

The Cats had two runners finish in the top 25. Sophomore Hannah Anderson, who made her season debut, came in 21st with a time of 18:15.7. Junior Elena Miller placed 25th with a time of 18:28.7.

Sophomore Ashley Ko finished 37th with a time of 19:06.1, freshman Mackenzie Wilson finished 45th with 19:43.2 and freshman Hannah Rose finished 52nd with 20:02.3.

NU’s finish at the Bradley Intercollegiate was a bit of a step back after their impressive opening to the 2016 season at the Illini Challenge on Sept. 2. The Cats won the three-team meet with an average time 18:13 over a 5K race in Champaign.

But NU chose to test its depth this weekend, as some of its top runners, including freshman Aubrey Roberts, didn’t complete. Roberts led NU to victory at the Illini Challenge by placing first with a time of 17:37 in her first collegiate competition, figuring to be a big part of the Cats’ future.
