Evanston fire chief Greg Klaiber will retire in the fall to serve as Northwestern’s director of emergency management, the city announced Wednesday.

Klaiber, who will officially retire on Sept. 14, has worked in the Evanston Fire Department for more than 30 years and became fire chief in 2010, according to a news release.

“I’ve had an incredible 31-year career with the Evanston Fire Department; it’s a bittersweet feeling knowing it’s coming to an end,” Klaiber said in the release. “I have had the privilege to lead the men and women of the Evanston Fire Department over the last six years. I marvel at their professionalism and the work they do each and every day.”

Klaiber, an Evanston resident and Evanston Township High School graduate, previously served in the department as a captain, division chief and deputy chief before becoming fire chief.

City manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in the release that Klaiber has served Evanston “with distinction” throughout his entire career.
