A 57-year-old man was robbed early Wednesday morning in central Evanston over an alleged narcotics debt.

The Evanston resident was standing with a 25-year-old acquaintance at the corner of Brown Avenue and Lake Street at about 3:45 a.m. when the younger man punched him in the face, saying he owed him money for drugs, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The assailant held the man on the ground and continued punching him until he handed over $200, Dugan said.

The assailant then ran away, leaving the man with a bloody and swollen nose, Dugan added.

Items worth nearly $2,000 stolen from basement

A 26-year-old woman discovered Saturday morning two televisions and two lawnmowers were stolen from her south Evanston apartment.

The woman reported that sometime between 6 p.m. on June 24 and 9 a.m. on Saturday the basement door of her apartment in the 300 block of Callan Avenue was forced open and the four items were taken, Dugan said.

The two red lawnmowers are valued at about $750 total, he said. The 55-inch LG TV and the 50-inch LG TV have a combined value of about $1,150.
