A 49-year-old Evanston woman was arrested Thursday in connection with alleged neglect of her elderly mother.

Margaret Flaherty, of the 2700 block of Hampton Parkway, was accused of failing to maintain her now-78-year-old mother’s hygiene, nutrition and prescribed medical treatment, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. Flaherty was released by a judge without bail at the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Saturday under the condition that she promise to appear at future court proceedings, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Evanston police officers were dispatched to Evanston Hospital on May 31 at about 4 a.m. after a relative visiting Flaherty called for emergency assistance, Dugan said. Flaherty’s mother suffers from diabetes and dementia.

The mother had become malnourished, having lost significant weight under her daughter’s care, Dugan added. The Evanston Police Department continues to investigate the case.

Dugan said the last case of elderly neglect, which are infrequent in the city, occurred a couple of years ago.

Flaherty is scheduled to appear at the Skokie Courthouse Tuesday.
