A child was hit by a car Wednesday near an Evanston elementary school, police said.

According to a tweet from the Evanston Police Department’s account at about 4 p.m., a vehicle struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Lee Street and Ashland Avenue, resulting in police closing the area.

The child was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Evanston police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

The intersection was back open to vehicle traffic as of 4:15 p.m., according to a tweet from the EPD’s account.

The intersection is right next to Washington Elementary School, 914 Ashland Ave. Students are dismissed on regular school days at 3:35 p.m., according to the school’s site.

Police are currently investigating the incident, Parrott said.
