The Evanston City Council delayed action Monday night on an ordinance that would require special licensing for landlords and is expected to impact Northwestern students living off campus.
The council chamber was filled to capacity tonight with residents speaking their minds about the proposed ordinance. At the beginning of the meeting, Ald. Don Wilson (4th) promised those in attendance that the council would send the ordinance back to staff for review.
Steven Monacelli, Associated Student Government vice president for community relations, represented NU students on the committee that drafted the proposal. He approached the council tonight to express his support for the ordinance, saying that it would help ensure that students living off campus have a safe environment with responsible landlords.
Those opposing the ordinance said that it was unfair to landlords and would allow city officials to arbitrarily revoke licenses without due process.
