Oakton Elementary School won an Illinois Arts Council grant, which will fund a classroom writing program for fourth graders, according to a District 65 news release issued Tuesday.
“This wonderful grant opportunity is very timely, given this year’s targeted focus on writing curriculum,” Oakton Elementary School principal Churchill Daniels said in the news release.
Sue Black, the teacher of the fourth-grade class, will head the initiative. The program, called “Kids Tell It Write!,” will involve Black meeting with students for 40 minutes to enhance their writing skills on selected topics, according to the news release. It will run from April 24 to May 9.
“This grant and Mrs. Black’s visit create a very special and unique learning experience for our students,” Daniels said in the news release.
Black is a published author, notable for her 2010 Storytelling World Resource Award and 2006 Prairie Area Reading Council Literacy Award. Besides teaching storytelling to children, Black holds bullying prevention workshops and storytelling programs for adults, according to her personal website.
