Over the past year and a half, Northwestern’s relationship with Evanston has been thrust into the national spotlight. While not all the coverage and events have been positive, the outcomes of the ongoing community discussions have been. Students, faculty, administrators and community members have used this renewed interest to create space for positive dialogue about building a more united Evanston.
On Wednesday, November 9th at 7:30pm, the Dean of Students is hosting the quarterly Community Conversation in Seabury Library. These meetings, which are open to all students, neighbors, city officials and university staff, are unique opportunities to bring the stakeholders of our community to the same table. We are dealing with real issues in our community – from safety conditions to zoning irregularities to noise violations – and we need real discussions to solve them.
Through initiatives like the Off-Campus Advisory Board, off-campus town hall meetings and these community conversations, NU students have more opportunities than ever before to have their voices heard. The release of the off-campus website was a huge step in disseminating information and ensuring students’ rights and responsibilities. Additionally, the communication between NU, ASG and the Evanston City government has led to the improvement of our living standards as well as the protection of our living spaces.
Please come and be part of the conversation this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. This unique opportunity to meet together as neighbors and discuss the issues prevalent in our neighborhood can only work in our favor. We, as students, are celebrated members of the Evanston community and we need a stronger voice. If you cannot make the event, but would still like to submit a comment, question and/or write a note to the Off-Campus Advisory Board, please do not hesitate to contact us.
As students, we work tirelessly in the classroom, on the athletics field and in our extracurricular activities to build a better Northwestern – yet we often forget that we are also part of the Evanston community. Come show your support and share your ideas this Wednesday to build a united Evanston. Represent yourself, represent your living unit and represent NU. We hope to see you there. Go Cats!
