Medill alum Bonnie Anderson discusses state of journalism

Former CNN correspondent Bonnie Anderson recalled how she had put aside her personal feelings when, as a young reporter, she met and shook hands with the man responsible for her father’s death: Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

“In that instant, I knew I was born to be a journalist,” Anderson said to an audience of about 30 at the McCormick Tribune Center Forum on Friday. “I knew I could cover any story I wanted.”

Anderson (BSJ ‘77) spoke as a guest lecturer with the Crain Lecture Series, a program that invites standout members of the media to Medill to speak about and highlight their work. Anderson also received the 2011 Outstanding Woman’s Alumnae Award from The Alumnae Association of Northwestern University on Sunday.
