Associated Student Government dances to gain more Facebook fans

If 1,500 people “like” the Associated Student Government on Facebook by Friday, the executive committee will do the chicken dance, said Matt Bellassai, ASG’s public relations vice president.

ASG held its first senate meeting of the year Wednesday evening in Norris University Center.

The main agenda item for the meeting was electing four senators to serve on the Rules Committee. This committee examines all legislation the senate considers to ensure it follows ASG legislation codes. Members also review and revise the ASG code twice each year.

“Rules Committee members are awkward and quirky,” said Speaker of the Senate Tyris Jones. “They have to really, really love the code.”

Five senators ran for the four spots; the winning senators were Cameron Sieber, Terrance Scotton, Brandon McNamara and Nalin Natrajan.

Ash Jaidev, director of the new student center initiative, spoke about the long-term project. He encouraged senators to spread the word about the project and garner as much student support as possible.

“We have a lot of support within a lot of different areas of the faculty and staff, and we’ve talked to the Board of Trustees twice,” President Claire Lew said. “Our last component to see this through is the student support.”

Emma Kerr, financial vice president, also made a presentation on FUNding to rally excitement for student group funding allocation, which will take place this quarter and again in the spring.

“I think that Senate went extremely well,” Lew said. “We were able to set a really positive tone about us being really action-oriented and being really efficient in our meetings.”
