College Republicans’ lack of winter speaker results in charge of group misconduct

The Associated Student Government Senate voted in favor of a recommendation by the Student Appropriations and Finance Committee to bring a charge of group misconduct against College Republicans on Wednesday.

The College Republicans failed to plan an event for Winter Quarter despite $1,500 in funding from SAFC for the event.

Outgoing College Republicans President Scott John Oudheusden said the group had planned to host Illinois 10th District Republican congressional candidate Robert Dold but was delayed due to “extenuating circumstances,” covered by SAFC under the category of acts of God, a legal term for events outside of human control that no one can be held responsible for. Illness and family emergencies were cited as having affected multiple members of the College Republicans’ leadership last quarter.

“There was no financial misconduct,” the Weinberg senior said.

Weinberg junior Emma Kerr, ASG financial vice president, said when SAFC met and spoke with College Republicans, the group had inadequate planning-they had no date set for the event nor a venue picked out.

Weinberg junior Brittany Bull, the newly elected president of College Republicans, said a charge of group misconduct would be devastating for future funding of the organization.

Despite what the rules say, this was “real life,” and the personal circumstances of College Republicans’ leaders didn’t allow them to host the event Winter Quarter, Oudheusden said.Kerr said she agreed.

“In real life, people are accountable,” she said.
