Firefighters rescue cat from Jackson Ave. blaze

Evanston firefighters rescued a cat from a blaze Sunday, officials said.

The cause of the fire, which caused damage estimated at $100,000, is still under investigation.

Officers responded to reports of smoke at an apartment building in the 2500 block of Jackson Avenue at 11:40 a.m., according to a statement released by Evanston Fire Department Division Chief Thomas Janetske on Tuesday morning. The first floor of the building sustained significant damage, but firefighters managed to contain the fire within an hour.

Though the residence was occupied at the time of the fire, officials conducted an evacuation and none of the occupants was injured – except for one cat.

“One cat sustained smoke inhalation and was resuscitated by firefighters on-scene using a special oxygen mask designed for animals,” Janetske said in the release. “The cat was later returned to its owner.”

The Red Cross is working to find housing for those displaced by the incident.
