Northwestern will open its 2008 season without one of its key leaders on defense.
Senior defensive tackle John Gill was suspended for the Aug. 30 season opener against Syracuse and the first week of training camp, which started Monday, for an undisclosed violation of team policy, head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Tuesday.
Gill had 50 tackles and four sacks last season, anchoring the Wildcats’ defensive line. He was honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2007 and has been named to preseason watch lists for the Bronco Nagurski (nation’s outstanding defensive player) and Outland (nation’s outstanding defensive lineman) trophies.
More details to come on this developing story.
