Spring Re-Boot

Kurt SollerThe Daily Northwestern

I’m not one to make up excuses. But sometimes, bizarre fashion on campus is not our fault. As seasons change and brands dictate, the style Zeitgeist fills our magazines, display windows and online stores. Last fall, cowboy boots were a hot choice for a boho outfit. Now, on the eve of spring, they’re back. Already? I’m pretty neutral about western-style boots. I think they work with a variety of ensembles and dozens of different types. You don’t have to be a certain size or dress in a certain style (as long as you don’t overdo it) to wear cowboys… but you should have good enough taste to choose a pair with interesting (but not too many) details and quality (or quality-looking) leather.

So, approving of the boot itself, the only problem I have with the trend is that it’s back so soon in what, to me, is the wrong season. As Levi’s and western style shirts come into play as the weather warms up, they’re obviously part-and-parcel for a current spring look. But isn’t that a little bit boring and costumey? Also, even if they do go with that hackneyed denim skirt of yours, why would you want to cover your shins with treated animal hyde as the sun comes out to play? The other option is to model your look after the Mary-Kate days of bohemian-bourgeoisie glory. But that’s, well, long gone.

And really, if you’re not channeling an Olsen sister as you walk under the Arch, there’s not much point in getting dressed each day. But since you’re probably going to put something on still – I’d choose something more weather-appropriate and fashion-forward if you’re looking for statement shoes. Sure, they’re in style and in season … but so are handkerchiefs.4
