Campuswide Election Voting Closes At 8 p.m.

Campuswide elections for ASG executive positions will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today on NU Link.

“We have five great candidates running, with each offering unique takes on their roles,” said Associated Student Government President Jay Schumacher, a Communication senior. “Now more than ever it’s important for students to get involved.”

Students can vote for president, executive vice president, student services vice president and academic vice president in the election.

Weinberg junior Julian Hill and SESP junior Jon Webber are the candidates for ASG president, the only contested race.

The remaining three races are uncontested.

Weinberg sophomore Matt Bogusz is the candidate for executive vice president, Weinberg sophomore Nate West is running for student services vice president, and McCormick junior Anna Xu is pursuing the position of academic vice president.

The ballot will also allow voters to vote “No Confidence” or write in candidates. Voters are also permitted to abstain from selecting a candidate.

Students will be able to vote by logging onto NU Link, the ASG-sponsored student Web portal that replaced HereAndNow on Saturday. No problems are expected, said NU Link creator and ASG Communications Director Robby Stein, a Medill senior and former Daily staffer.

Candidates plan to make last-minute campaign pushes today to attract voters. Hill said his plans for the day will be a surprise, but hinted that some events might take place at The Rock.

“We’ve got some good stuff coming up,” Hill said. “It’s going to be fun.”

Webber said he plans to campaign in front of Technological Institute, The Arch and Norris University Center. He and his campaign team will also visit residence halls, he said.

“We will be all around campus to get every vote we can,” Webber said.

Election Commissioner Eric Parker said he expects voting will be similar to last year’s election, in which about 3,330 students voted.

“I expect 2,000 to 3,000 people to vote,” the Weinberg junior said. “I expect a pretty quiet election.”

Election results are scheduled to be announced at about 9 p.m. tonight. At that time, the Election Commission will notify the candidates via telephone.

At Wednesday’s ASG meeting, the winners of today’s election will be sworn in unless there are run-off elections. The speaker of the Senate will swear in the vice presidents, and the outgoing president, Schumacher, will swear in the president-elect.

Senators also plan to elect a third member to the ASG judicial board, said Speaker of the Senate Jesse Garfinkel, a Weinberg freshman.

Garfinkel said he foresees no bills being introduced in Senate this week.

“Traditionally, ASG quiets down during elections,” Garfinkel said.
