EPD looking for Hummer that hit student

Evanston Police Department issued a statement Tuesday asking the public to help them find the driver of a yellow Hummer H2 that struck a Weinberg senior on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Archana Sriram was biking to campus from her Rogers Park home at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday when a yellow Hummer struck her at the intersection of Lake Street and Sherman Avenue.

Sriram suffered facial injuries, a broken jaw, a hip fracture and a broken leg.

Police currently do not have a description of the driver or license plate information, the statement said.

“We are doing everything we can to locate the driver,” Deputy Chief Joseph Bellino said.

EPD’s Traffic Bureau has asked the office of the Secretary of State to provide a list of registered yellow Hummer H2s in the state, Bellino said.

Bellino said he could not give an estimate of when the list would arrive because the office fields many requests from police departments statewide.

In the meantime, investigators will continue to canvass the crime scene to look for new information and find people who might have witnessed the accident, Bellino said.

Investigators found no debris at the accident site, but investigators aren’t certain if that means the Hummer was undamaged, he said.

Sriram is in good condition at St. Francis Hospital, 355 Ridge. Ave., after undergoing facial surgery Thursday night and leg surgery Tuesday, her mother Sheila Sriram said.

“All we want is to get the person who did this,” Sheila Sriram said. “(Archana) has suffered so much. The whole year is gone. She was going to graduate in June.”

Sriram’s jaw is wired shut and she will not be able to bear weight on her injured leg for three months.

She will undergo several weeks of rehabilitation in the Evanston area before flying to her parent’s home in Houston to complete rehab.

The Thursday accident was Evanston’s second accident involving a bicyclist this month. An 88-year-old Evanston man was killed instantly Feb. 8 in north Evanston when a garbage truck backed into him as he was riding through traffic.

In response to Sriram’s accident, representatives from the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation planned an event with speakers for Friday morning at the accident scene.

The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Street and Sherman Avenue, said Norbert Budde, the group’s north suburban coordinator.

The event will highlight the two accidents and bring attention to the group’s “Drive With Care” campaign, Budde said.

People with information or tips are urged to call EPD at 847-866-5000.
