Cats stumble on N.C. trip, drop to 3-4 (Men’s Tennis)

After falling to both North Carolina and Wake Forest this weekend, the Northwestern men’s tennis team returns to Evanston with a losing record.

In a 5-2 loss to North Carolina on Friday, NU dropped the doubles point, with the only win coming from No. 2 doubles team of Marc Dwyer and Christian Tempke, 8-6.

At No. 1 doubles, Matt Christian and Adam Schaechterle fell to the Tar Heels’ top-ranked team of Brad Pomeroy and Raian Luchici, 8-5.

“I think it’s generally harder for us to win the doubles point because our team has more baseline players,” Tempke said.

In singles Tempke upset fifth-ranked Luchici, winning the No.1 spot 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11). Willie Lock also won at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

On Sunday No. 15 Wake Forest won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles, taking the match 5-2 and dropping NU to 3-4 on the season.

Tempke and Lock gained the only two singles wins. Tempke beat No. 11 Todd Paul in three sets and Lock took No. 35 Andrew Hamar in two.

“Christian really established himself nationally this weekend,” NU coach Paul Torricelli said. “In both cases he was behind, and he fought back to win. He really showed a lot of heart.”
