Tennis teams travel out of state for weekend matches (Tennis)

The Northwestern men’s tennis team looks to improve its record this weekend after falling to No. 26 Notre Dame last Saturday.

The No. 51 Cats (3-2) will travel east to face North Carolina’s No. 1 ranked doubles team of Brad Pomeroy and Raian Luchici this Friday. The Tar Heels are 2-0 this season.

The Cats will remain in North Carolina and head to Wake Forest on Sunday. The Demon Deacons are ranked 15th this year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the highest ranking in the program’s history. The team returns five of its six starters, including No. 11 singles player Todd Paul.

The women’s tennis team took charge at the Wildcat Invitational last weekend, ending on a sweet note of 5-1 in singles against New Mexico last. The Cats hope to take that momentum south to Austin, Texas, this Saturday.

The No. 6 Cats will be facing the No. 3 team in the nation at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns are 0-1 after falling to No. 26 Arizona State last weekend.

NU scored a 5-2 victory over the Longhorns last season. This will be the first home match for Texas coach Patty Fendick-McCain, who took over for coach Jeff Moore last July.
