Police indict man on multiple charges

A Chicago man was indicted Thursday in the theft of a woman’s purse in Evanston last month and the stabbing of a man who tried to help her, prosecutors said.

Anthony “Clyde” Benson, 42, of the 5200 block of West Crystal Street, was indicted on charges of vehicular invasion and aggravated battery in the Dec. 13 incident at Main Street and Dodge Avenue. Benson allegedly smashed the passenger-side window of the 72-year-old woman’s car as she stopped at a light and grabbed her purse.

Benson also was charged with aggravated battery in the stabbing of Skokie resident Colin Knight, 37, who chased Benson to a van and got the license plate number.

Benson is scheduled to next appear in Circuit Court in Skokie on Feb. 1.
