Becky Plevin: So, what do you think of this Suttometer?
Tyrell Sutton: It’s funny! I never had anything like that before.
When I first saw it, I was kinda like, ‘What is this?’ you know? It was pretty funny, a lot of guys are making fun of me for it right now.
But, oh well.
BP: I saw on the NU football website that you’re five-foot-nine.
(“Hah!” he exclaims.) Are you really 5-9?
TS: No. I’m not 5-9, I’m probably not. I highly doubt I’m 5-9. I’m probably 5-7. Because how tall are you?
BP: I’m 5-2 1/2.
TS: I’m not even that much taller than you! So there’s no way I’m 5-9. I’m probably 5-7, 5-8.
BP: Have you found your shortness has helped you in any way?
TS: Definitely. I can hide behind guys like (Zach) Strief and Dylan (Thiry) and all those big guys up front. So it definitely has its perks.
BP: I heard you wear some great suits at press conferences. Tell me about your suits.
TS: The first time I didn’t wear a suit – it was sort of a purple shirt to symbolize Northwestern – and a purple tie. So that was nice, that was nice. The next time I wore a brown suit. That was pretty nice, I love that suit. It was sharp, you know? I don’t like stepping out of the house and just looking like a bum or just looking like anything. I wouldn’t say the next press conference we have – but the one after that – I’m going to come in a different one.
BP: Is this a special one?
TS: It’s probably my favorite suit of all time.
BP: Can you describe it?
TS: No, I’m going to have to leave you guessing. Gonna have to leave you guessing on that one.
BP: Are you a fashion guy?
TS: I’m not a metro, but I like to come out of the house in fashion.
If you ever see me going out somewhere, you’ll see me in matching outfits or matching hat and shoes.
BP: Kanye West is coming to campus on Nov. 13. What do you think of Kanye?
TS: All I know is, if we don’t make it back here from Ohio State, I’m going to be really, really mad that I won’t be able to see Kanye. I think we have a – Hey, Coach (says to Walker), speaking of which, can we have Sunday off? I know Kanye West is coming here. (Walker: Who?)
See? Exactly. You may not know who that is, but can you like – never mind, I don’t want to get in trouble. (Still explaining to Walker.) Kanye West? He’s a rapper. I’ve got one of his CDs. You wanna listen to it?
But he’s a phenomenal rapper, I’d like to hear what he has to say.
I’ve never been to a concert before so it’d be my first one. I think it’d be pretty interesting.
BP: What’s your theme song? You know, if you had to pick one song that either pumps you up or describes you.
TS: “Til I Collapse,” by Eminem – it’s on “The Eminem Show.” He’s always talking about how he’ll go through everything he can at full go ’til his body gives out. I listen to it every single time before we have a game.
BP: Can you sing it?
TS: No, probably not. It’s a little vulgar.
BP: Okay, then I’ll check it out on iTunes or something. My last question: Do you have a tattoo?
TS: Yea I do. (Rolls up jersey on right arm.)
BP: Football player?
TS: Yea! People think it’s some sort of space ship or space alien or
something like that. Do you know Halo? A lot of people think it’s the Master Chief from Halo. They came up with that in high school.
BP: Is it a specific football player?
TS: No – A lot of people ask if it’s me and I say, ‘If you want it to be.’
**said afterward, casually, not in QA format-
TS: I was in Elder, going back to my room, and I just
happened to just see the Daily Northwestern. And
some guy was holding it and I go, “what is this?” It was the first
time I’d seen the Daily Northwestern. I turn to the back and go,
“what is that?” A couple of guys are like, “is that
you?” I was like, “nope-that’s not even me” and just walked to my
room. A couple of guys were like, “that was Tyrell!” I was like,
“nah, gotta get out of here.”
BP: Why would you want to deny it?
TS: Because, I don’t like to get the attention like that. That’s not
me. I don’t look for personal attention at all. I rather you just
treat me like a normal person and be on your way. Just say “hi” and
say whatever you got to say and leave. I thought that was pretty
funny though. I don’t know, I’d never seen anything like that
before-. I had a day named after me though.
BP: You had a day named after you?!
TS: Why am I even talking? It was Tyrell Sutton Day. I think it was
like November 17th or something like that. The mayor and everybody
came down. We had an assembly, it was weird. They had like a whole
assembly, playing all kinds of stuff. I don’t know, it was too much.
That’s what it was, it was too much.
