Grad back at NU as director of Latino affairs

Ronnie Rios has some unfinished business at Northwestern.

Although she graduated Spring Quarter, Rios is now back as the acting director of Latino/Hispanic Affairs and hopes to connect NU’s Latino community with alumni and Latinos throughout Chicago.

“I couldn’t turn (this job) down,” said Rios, Weinberg ’04. “I made my dent in the Northwestern community, but overall in the Latino community I wasn’t completely done. This position is the perfect opportunity to do that.”

Rios, a Chicago native, said she hopes to strengthen the NU Connections program, which pairs freshmen with upperclassmen mentors, and the NU Latino community’s relationship with its alumni.

She said she wants her Latino contacts from the Chicago area and Evanston to improve connections with NU students.

Rios said her biggest goal is being visible and accessible to students, but she added that she wants to help smaller groups get off the ground.

“I know exactly what it’s like to be in the shoes of students,” Rios said. “It’s a very unique and strong relationship I’m going to have with all the students here.”

After all, she was a student herself a few months ago.

“I very much understand them, especially as Latino students at Northwestern and in terms of the difference Latino students can have here,” Rios said.
