Student groups to petition ASG for more money

Student groups that did not appeal for more funding last week will try again at tonight’s Associated Student Government Senate meeting.

Although 26 of 44 student groups that applied last Wednesday received $10,000 in additional funds, 18 other groups — including Alianza, College Republicans, For Members Only, Northwestern Community Development Corps and Students for Environmental and Ecological Development — will vie for about $33,000 remaining.

NCDC Co-chairwoman Katy Schumaker said the group plans to ask for $1,200 to buy candy for Project Pumpkin, a fall event for area children. The event’s success depends on ASG’s final allocation, said Schumaker, a Weinberg junior.

The Student Activities Finance Board recommended the group receive about $8,700.

“We’re not too concerned, but we do take it seriously because we can’t have the event without the candy,” Schumaker said.

Mayfest, which organizes Dillo Day, received the largest piece of the $10,000 doled out last week. Co-chairwoman Stephanie Rich said the group’s impact on student life was a key factor.

“We are asking for funding for the largest event on campus,” said Rich, a Medill junior.

Student groups can petition again in Fall Quarter to fund winter and spring events if any money is left over after tonight’s meeting. Senators did not vote to cut money from any student group or co-sponsorship last week, keeping the $43,786 amendment pool unchanged.

ASG Financial Vice President Zaid Pardesi, chairman of the Student Activities Finance Board, said it’s “very normal” for senators to refrain from cutting any group’s funding because senators respect SAFB’s recommendations. Pardesi said senators will approach tonight’s meeting with the same caution as last week.

“They’re going to continue to be very conservative tomorrow,” Pardesi said Tuesday. “I think that’s a very good precedent they’re setting.”
