Four-year-old Joseph Gardner gets involved with U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky’s reading of “Hattie and the Fox,” by Mem Fox, at the Early Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Ave., on Tuesday. The Illinois Democrat’s visit with the students in Joan Behrmann’s

half-day Head Start class, made up of children between 3 and 5 years old, was part of the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s “Week of the Young Child.” The association advocates early education programs like this one in Evanston. Schakowsky also read several other stories to the children, but Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” was the class’ favorite.
