Unopposed EVP candidate sets goals for campaign

When Bryan Tolles heard his race for Associated Student Government executive vice president was unopposed, he didn’t start celebrating.

Instead, he began hanging posters and talking to students in an effort to win support.

“When I heard I was unopposed, it was bittersweet,” said Tolles, a Weinberg sophomore. “I felt prepared to campaign against another candidate.”

Now Tolles’ only competition is the no confidence option on the ballot. If more than 50 percent of students do not vote for him in the April 15 election, the ASG Executive Board will select the position.

But Tolles said he hopes students will appreciate his ideas and cast their votes in the race.

“If students are well informed about what I want to do, I don’t see any abstentions … but with unopposed races making ASG look lackluster, apathy is expected,” Tolles said.

Tolles has experience as a senator for Elder Hall and the fraternity system, a member of the External Relations Committee and the Executive Committee and secretary for his fraternity, Kappa Sigma.

The executive vice president’s duties include heading the Executive Committee and overseeing B- and T-status student groups, which do not receive money from the Student Activities Fee. Smaller groups are usually given T status immediately after they form, with the goal of eventually moving up to B status. B-status groups have access to Norris University Center and are eligible to have senators.

Some of Tolles’ goals are to encourage student groups to co-sponsor more events and to give B-status groups funding from the Student Activities Fee so they can learn to manage money. But Tolles said initiating the funding change is a long-term goal.

“On paper it doesn’t look very feasible, but I see it as a possibility,” Tolles said.

Joe Graciosa, president of the Filipino student group Kaibigan, which Tolles advised while on the Executive Committee, said his idea would help those groups put on better programs and get past the “Catch-22 of funding.”

“I think the idea of giving some of the Student Activities Fee funding to groups is wonderful and should definitely be on everyone’s agenda,” said Graciosa, a Weinberg junior.

Tolles’ platform also touches on standardizing and improving the training process for student group treasurers through the Student Organization Finance Office and providing fund-raising kiosks for groups to sell food or drinks outside of Norris to raise money.

Nicole Mash, the current executive vice president, said the position provides a chance to improve student life, even if efforts aren’t always praised.

“This job isn’t about recognition, it’s just about doing great things for students,” said Mash, a Weinberg senior.

Chris Dent, Kappa Sig president, said Tolles is “an excellent multitasker” who would do well as executive vice president.

“He handles a good workload, and everything he does I’ve seen him do well,” said Dent, a Weinberg sophomore.

Tolles’ campaign manager Ted Haller, who met him through Kappa Sig, said Tolles will bring new ideas to the position.

“Instead of just reading the job requirements, he looks for what’s missing and he adds to it,” said Haller, a Medill sophomore.

Tolles said although running unopposed nearly guarantees his victory, he wants to show he is qualified for the position.

“It’s important for me not just to be that candidate that slips through the cracks but to prove that I am experienced,” he said. “I do have a good platform and I can help student groups.”
